Removable Denture Options

4 Denture Options in Scranton, PA | Free Implant Denture ConsultsYou might feel used to the idea of taking dentures out for cleaning each day. If you prefer that familiar routine or want a lower-cost option, removable dentures may be a good fit.

Traditional Full Denture

The first removable denture option is a traditional full denture. This replaces all teeth in the upper or lower arch with artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored base, usually made of acrylic. It either rests on the gums or secures into place through suction or a denture adhesive. You’ll remove it for cleaning and keep it out at night.

Traditional dentures come with some drawbacks. Changes in the gums and underlying bone can affect the fit over time, and you may start to notice a conventional denture move more often while eating or speaking once it doesn’t fit properly. You might also develop sore spots from dentures slipping and find you need more denture adhesive to keep them in place.

Conventional dentures can make certain foods harder to chew because they don’t provide the same bite force. Moreover, a full upper denture is designed to cover the upper palate, which may also affect how patients experience food.

Snap-in Denture

The most straightforward upgrade from conventional dentures is the snap-in denture. These restorations, also called implant overdentures, generally retain the artificial teeth and gum-colored acrylic base of a traditional denture. The key difference is that snap-in dentures snap on and off dental implants for support. Our dentists can use 4 to 6 mini implants, or 2 conventional dental implants, to hold the false teeth in place. You’ll still be able to remove them for daily cleaning.

By attaching to dental implants for support, snap-in dentures stay in place. They won’t slip during eating and speaking. Moreover, if you already have a denture, you might not need to start from scratch. Our doctors may be able to convert an existing denture to an implant denture if it is in good condition and has enough room for the attachments. Converting an older denture to a snap-in denture can save on the cost of crafting an entirely new prosthetic.

Non-Removable Denture Options

If you prefer an alternative to removable dentures, our practice has you covered! We offer two options that you’ll never have to take out at home. While they tend to be a higher investment, non-removable dentures provide a result that looks and feels more natural than traditional and snap-in dentures.

Semi-Removable Roundhouse Bridge

This option, offered under the brand Fix-on-Six®, is a zirconia horseshoe-shaped bridge secured to 6 to 10 mini dental implants. It remains in place during daily use, and you’ll never take it out at home. However, our dentists will remove it periodically for professional cleaning and maintenance. Depending on your needs, the bridge may include gum-colored material to replace lost tissue and provide lip support. This option looks more natural than removable dentures and is more cost-effective than a non-removable bridge.

Non-Removable Roundhouse Bridge

This roundhouse bridge is permanently cemented in place onto 4 conventional dental implants or 10 to 12 mini dental implants. It never comes out. The bridge itself has no gum-colored material, better replicating your old teeth. While non-removable bridges are the highest investment, they are also designed to look and feel the most natural among all options. You’ll still need to keep the area under the bridge clean using a water flosser.
