What Are Snap-In Dentures?

Before we unpack the process a bit further, it might help to understand what a snap-in denture is. Also called an implant overdenture, the snap-in denture is a removable denture that attaches securely to implants using built-in connectors.

The snap-in denture looks similar to conventional dentures. Yet it offers much more stability by replacing suction or denture glue with implant stabilization. The implant denture’s design still allows easy removal for regular daily cleaning.

Our dentists can secure your denture with two types of dental implants: conventional dental implants and mini dental implants. We may recommend mini implants for patients with limited jawbone volume who want to avoid bone grafting. Mini implants also make sense for patients interested in immediate results. Because mini implants use a less invasive placement process that happens all in one day, we can secure a functional denture on top right after.

The Snap-In Dentures Process Step-by-Step

Step 1: Free Consultation and Personalized Assessment

First, you come to our practice for a free consultation. Our implant dentists will take the time to hear about your concerns, goals, and budget to determine if the snap-in denture or another implant denture option is right for you.

We use a CBCT scanner, a special 3D imaging scanner, to assess whether you have enough healthy jawbone volume for conventional dental implants or whether mini dental implants make more sense in your case.

Step 2: Planning Your Implant Placement

Next, one of our doctors plans your implant placement, which allows us to examine your bone up close and map the exact positioning of the implants for the best possible outcome. They will determine the precise size and number of implants you’ll need.

If your treatment plan uses conventional implants, you’ll typically need two implants in the upper or lower jaw to stabilize a denture. If your plan uses mini implants, one of our dentists may recommend anywhere from 4 to 8 mini dental implants.

Step 3: Placing Your Dental Implants

Next, we place your dental implants. If we use conventional dental implants, you’ll need time to heal before your denture can be finalized. You’ll wear a temporary restoration in the meantime. Mini dental implants are different: because of their smaller, one-piece design, they often allow us to adapt your denture the same day your implants are placed.

Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout, and most patients report very little discomfort during placement, especially when we use mini implants. If you feel anxious about dental visits, we also offer oral sedation to help ease that stress. We can discuss if sedation is right for you at your consultation.

Step 4: Securing Your Denture

Next, we add O-ring housings to your existing denture, or we add a brand-new snap-in denture to secure your teeth in place. If your case uses mini implants, we can place your functional restoration right away.

Once secured, your denture snaps firmly onto your implants, eliminating the slipping and adhesive that come with a traditional denture.
